new light fixtures hanging from the ceiling in the Dean College Campus Center

This summer Dean College has been undertaking a complete interior and exterior lighting overhaul. The project consists of replacing more than 6,000 fixtures and adding more than 1,700 new occupancy controls. By converting to LEDs, campus lighting will be more sustainable and efficient.

Dean College partnered with GreenerU, an energy solutions provider, to develop this campus-wide lighting solution.

“The project is one example of our ongoing efforts to be more sustainable and lessen our environmental impact,” says Brian Kelly, Associate Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities at Dean College.

As a result of this project, Dean will save over one million kWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to the electricity needed to power approximately 123 homes in one year, or 79,571 gallons of gas.

“When students return this fall, they will notice brighter lighting, set to promote productivity, alertness and concentration,” says Kelly. “The new sensors will adjust brightness levels based on occupancy.”

The lighting project, which began earlier this year, is expected to be completed by fall 2019.

Over the past 10 years, $62M in campus improvements and new construction. This endeavor is yet another example of Dean’s commitment to our student’s quality of life.
