Dean College Holds Veterans Day Ceremony

The annual Dean College Veterans Day Ceremony was held on Thursday, November 11, 2021, in front of the College’s War Memorial on campus. Dean College President Dr. Paula M. Rooney called the event to order, asking the audience to honor our service members, to remember their courage and dedication, and to thank them for the sacrifices that they have made for our country.

The ceremony began with a student performance of the national anthem and presentation of colors by the Marine Corps Junior ROTC color guard from Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School. Dr. Rooney delivered remarks, noting the history of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the day that major combat in World War I ended. Once called Armistice Day, November 11th was a day to honor all the heroes that died in World War I. The name of the holiday later changed to Veterans Day, to honor all who served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces. Dr. Rooney also acknowledged the impact past and present veterans have had on the Dean Community as students, alumni, guests, faculty and staff—including a tribute to Dr. Pietro “Pete” Savo, who passed away this year.

Additional remarks were given by Jim Beauregard, Associate Professor of Theatre and Dance and veteran of the United States Army, and Kevin Fitzgibbon ’22, a Criminal Justice and Homeland Security major and veteran of the United States Army. Professor Beauregard expressed gratitude to our veterans for their service to “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” while Fitzgibbon raised awareness for veterans’ mental health and the importance of supporting our veterans when they’ve returned home.

Following remarks, Dean College Singers performed “I Vow to Thee, My Country." Jon Clark played “God Bless America” on the trumpet to conclude the ceremony.
