Dean College Announces George Martin as Director of Athletics
Dean College is pleased to announce the appointment of George Martin as its new Director of Athletics. Martin will lead the College’s athletic program, which has 16 intercollegiate teams participating in the NCAA Division III.
Currently a Director of Athletics at Colby-Sawyer College, Martin is responsible for the recruitment and retention of student-athletes in addition to the management and operation of the Chargers’ athletic program. Martin also serves as the head coach of the women’s basketball team, a program he has overseen for more than 25 seasons. Under Martin’s guidance, the team has recorded double digit wins in conference play in 21 of the past 23 seasons. In addition to his basketball coaching responsibilities, he has also guided the women’s volleyball team.
Martin brings a wealth of collegiate athletic experience to Dean College. “Dean has a rich athletic history and has seen marked success in our athletic program. I have every confidence that George Martin is a skilled and effective leader who understands, supports, and will advance the mission, values, and vision of athletics at Dean College,” says Dean College President, Dr. Paula M. Rooney.
“I am thankful to all for the opportunity that has been given to me. I am excited to be a Bulldog and begin working with the athletic department, the Dean Community and most importantly, our student-athletes. I am looking forward to being part of The Dean Difference,” says Martin.
Currently a member of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) for all sports excluding football, Dean College will become the newest full core member institution in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), beginning with the 2020-21 academic year. Dean College football will continue to participate in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC).
“Dean takes pride in our focus on the success and well-being of our student-athletes, in the classroom, in their sport, and in the Dean College Community. We are looking forward to working with George to maintain and enhance the best student-athlete experience possible,” says Dave Drucker, Dean of Students.
“George Martin is a perfect institutional fit,” says Rooney. “We welcome George’s leadership and know that Dean Athletics will continue to thrive as we expand our athletic endeavors and promote The Dean Difference.”
Prior to Colby-Sawyer, Martin has held coaching positions at Wagner College and Fitchburg State University. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Springfield College and a Master of Science in Education from Wagner College.
Martin will begin working at Dean College in early April 2020 with a talented and dedicated group of student-athletes, coaches and staff.
