Success and Career Advisors work with you throughout your entire time at Dean, providing personalized guidance to help you find academic, personal and career success. Whether you need some support with your studies, achieving your goals or finding your place at Dean, your Success and Career Advisor is here to help you every step of the way.
Laura Field, the Assistant Director of Advising and a Success and Career Advisor, answered a few questions to help guide you in the right direction.
Q: Tell us a little about your role and your work with students.
Laura: I work primarily with students in the Joan Phelps Palladino School of Dance. As their Success and Career Advisor, I help them navigate all Dean has to offer, help them create a plan to be successful at Dean and figure out how everything they are learning in and out of the classroom can help them reach their goals after college.
Q: What happens when a student meets with their advisor?
Laura: Students meet with their Success and Career Advisor for many reasons. Most often the Advisor wants to get to know the whole student and will ask lots of questions about their academic goals along with their interests and hobbies.
Q: What advice would you give to help students start the semester off strong?
Laura: My best advice is to get involved. Join a club or go to a campus event. College is the time to try new hobbies and explore new interests. And if you don’t know where to start, ask your Advisor.
Q: If a student needs some help or extra support with their studies, what would you recommend?
Laura: I always recommend speaking with your faculty member first – they know the content and course expectations better than anyone else. If you still want or need more support after speaking with them, speak with your Success and Career Advisor about what other options are available to you and where to find them.
