Summer Pre-College Programs at Dean
During the summer months, Dean offers a variety of pre-college programs to high school students ages 14-18. Students can choose from a selection of science and sports-based programs with countless one-of-a-kind opportunities.
As we reach the final day of our summer programs, below is a recap of what these students have learned during their time at Dean.
Forensics
Can you really catch a criminal in 24 hours? Students in our forensics pre-college program challenged the methods and assumptions presented in popular crime television programs from an objective and systematic scientific perspective.
Throughout their two weeks on campus, students were placed in teams and worked together on mock crime scenes. They took part in five unique labs, including blood spatter analysis, trace evidence analysis and forensic pathology, gaining hands-on experience while using forensic techniques. Students also listened to guest speakers and attended tours in the area, including a stop at the Franklin Police Department.
Sport Management
Instructed by Dr. Ernie May, sport management program coordinator and assistant director of the Center for Business Entertainment and Sport Management at Dean, students in the sport management pre-college program were fully immersed of the world of sports. Off-campus, they caught a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots and Revolution. Back on campus, they had the opportunity to enjoy a round of friendly competition in the classroom during their Esports gaming demo. On the business side, students were instructed in sales pitches and ended the program with a capstone project where they were mock owners of a sports franchise, making strategic and operational decisions to drive attendance and improve fan satisfaction.
Sports Broadcasting
Students in our sports-broadcasting pre-college program enjoyed countless one-of-a-kind opportunities, from acting as play-by-play announcers at the Pan American Game Scrimmage for Team USA Basketball, to participating in a LIVE Patriots.com Radio broadcast. They were even featured on ABC6 news for their participation with TV stand-ups during a baseball game. Back on campus, they had the opportunity to conduct a live radio broadcast on Power 88.3 FM and create their own television demo reel. The program was instructed by John Rooke, director for the Center for Business, Entertainment and Sport Management and the voice of the New England Patriots, New England Revolution and Providence College men’s basketball.
