Dean Spotlight: Black Student Union
The Black Student Union (BSU) at Dean College is a dedicated group of students who provide a safe space for minorities on campus and serves as the primary advocacy organization for Black students at Dean. The group is hard at work planning the annual Black Excellence Showcase, which will be held virtually this year on Saturday, February 27, 2021. We caught up with BSU club president, DJ Whaley ‘21, to learn more about the club and upcoming showcase. Read on to learn more!
Q: Tell us about the Black Student Union.
A: BSU is a community which allows those of all ethnicities and races to come together, celebrate each other’s differences and appreciate culture. BSU is here for those students who may have a campus concern or problem, providing a group who will welcome them in a non-judgmental zone with open arms. As of right now, we have close to thirty members, and we meet every other Monday. Any student interested in joining can contact student activities to learn more.
Q: What type of events does BSU host?
A: In the past, we have put on a wide variety of events such as the Black Excellence Showcase, fashion shows, open discussion forums and open mic nights.
Q: What is the Black Excellence Showcase?
A: This year is the 4th Annual Black Excellence Showcase, held virtually on February 27 at 7 p.m. The event showcases the amazing talents of students here at Dean College. The event was originally created to provide representation for those who felt they were not properly able to showcase their talents. It has now grown to be one of the most prominent showcases of culture and diversity at Dean. The showcase will feature a variety of acts with talents ranging from dance, spoken word and singing.
Q: What are you most excited about for the Black Excellence Showcase?
A: I am most looking forward to having each act be represented and given the ability to showcase their talent. I am also excited to offer a great time to the Dean Community!
Q: What other upcoming events can students expect to see from BSU?
A: BSU will be holding its first open mic night on March 11. Any and all acts such as dance, spoken word, singing etc. are welcome. Our Diversely Successful Discussion Forum will be held on March 22. During this event, we will be speaking with Dean alumni to learn the tips and tricks about how to become successful after college.
