When it comes to choosing a college dance degree program, it’s important to understand the differences between both the programs and the degrees themselves. You may find yourself wondering whether to pursue a BA program in the field or one with a BFA. Dean College offers both a bachelor’s degree in Dance as well as a Dance BFA. Although both programs sound the same, they actually differ quite a bit, with one being a more intensive study of the art form, while the other provides more versatility, allowing the student to pick up additional skills besides dance. Choosing between the two depends on understanding these key differences, as well as having some clear career goals in mind.

What's the Difference Between a BA and a BFA?

The initials in the degree names are the key to determining just how different these dance degrees are. BA is short for Bachelor of Arts, while BFA is short for Bachelor of Fine Arts. As you can imagine, one of those degrees is more art-focused (the BFA) and the other is a bit more well-rounded, similar to other Bachelor of Arts degrees in other fields. The differences go beyond this to include the curriculum, whether or not students need a minor or can double major, and more.

BFA and BA Dance Curriculum

Both degrees provide conservatory-level training in ballet, jazz, tap, modern and related techniques, complemented by a well-rounded liberal arts education. Beyond that, the curriculum depends on what concentration you choose. At Dean College, Dance BFA majors can choose between the choreography track, where you will focus on the choreographic process and learning how to communicate your artistic vision, and the performance track, where you will focus on training in both the studio and on the stage. In the Dance BA program, students will also take courses in dance history, dance composition, Laban Movement Analysis, dance pedagogy, writing for the arts, anatomy and kinesiology. They can choose from four tracks: dance pedagogy, performance/choreography, dance studies and studio management.

Minors and Double Majors

Although both a BA and a BFA require a similar number of credit hours to obtain, the way that these degrees are structured are different. A BA provides more electives and schedule flexibility, so students can take on an additional major, such as Business Management, Early Childhood Education or Exercise Science, which will prepare them for a life outside of dancing professionally. For example, they will gain the skills needed to run their own dance school one day. BA students are also encouraged to take on a minor, which also allows them to study other subjects in depth.

BFA degrees are different because they consist of more dance technique or choreography classes. Though this program offers fewer electives for a double major or minor, it does include specialties within the field, such as performance and choreography, as well as targeted allied studies in both the Dance BFA program and the Dean College core curriculum.

Which Degree is Right for You?

Choosing which program to enroll in, either a BA in Dance or a BFA in Dance, depends on several factors. For example, what are your career goals? If you want to become a professional dancer or choreographer, then a BFA will help you enhance your dance skills and learn more about movement and anatomy, all of which make you a stronger, more versatile dancer. On the other hand, if you want to work as a dance teacher or run your own dance studio, then a BA dance degree might be the best option, because you can take courses in education or business alongside dance.

While there is no right or wrong choice, it all comes down to the dancer's goals, as well as the program requirements. Weighing those requirements carefully and considering career goals will help students make the best possible decision between a BA and a BFA in Dance. Ready to take the first step?
